President Barack Obama has instituted policies that directly affect the Hispanic population within the United States. The majority of Hispanics cast their vote to show their support for Obama during the election, partially due to the encouragement of Hispanic social media such as Spanish-speaking radio and newspapers and partially in response to perceived oppressive laws that Hispanics have attributed to the Republican Party. Hispanics and Obama have formed a friendship that won’t soon be broken.
Obama’s policies directly affect both naturalized and undocumented Hispanics within U.S. borders. These include policy moves to lessen the restrictions making immigration and naturalization a difficult process, the trillion-dollar stimulus package and following economic stimulus bills, and the reversing of welfare reform gained under former President George Bush. Hispanics and Obama have formed a partnership based on common interests and goals. Hispanics hope to prosper as a result of Obama’s policies, not only financially but in quality of life issues as well.
The result of Spanish media’s endorsement of Obama is that Hispanics in the U.S. are firmly behind a president who is perceived to be addressing their plight. The Hispanic social media definitely influenced the voting behavior of their audience and will likely continue doing so through the next presidential election.
The relationship between Hispanics and Obama will continue to grow. President Obama is banking on the global appeal of his policies to Hispanics both here and abroad to continue to generate Hispanic votes and support. The question is: for how long will this friendship last?
I look forward to your comments.
